The newly reformatted Challenge Cup will be a Supercup match, this season between the reigning playoff champion NJ/NY Gotham FC and NWSL Shield winner San Diego Wave FC. The regular NWSL season will begin the following day.

2020- 2023 format:
In the initial four years of the competition, each NWSL team engaged in a group stage, typically featuring four to six games, often organized based on geographic divisions. Subsequently, knockout matches were held to ascertain the Cup winner. In the 2023 season, the NWSL shifted the tournament schedule to align with the season itself, responding to player apprehensions regarding injuries.
2024 format:
In 2024, the NWSL Challenge Cup will transition to a single pre-season match between the current NWSL Champions and the current NWSL Shield holder.
